This lovely portal tomb must have an amazing story to tell. How on earth it has survived is beyond me. But then Kilkeel would seem to be an unusual place. For a start there are these fields in the middle of the town - a housing estate to one side and the rear of some shops to the other. Through the middle of these fields runs a lane and in the bank on one side of this lane is a portal tomb, like a tunnel through the bank.
From the front (inside the field) it really does look ugly, but this could be caused by the posts and barbed wire that are in front of it. From the rear it is really nice, the chamber stones splaying out beneath the slanted capstone - a really well balanced structure.
Watch out for the farmer selling this land and this becoming a feature in a communal green at some time in the future .....

The name 'The Crawtree Stone' is a very apt one for a tomb. The crawtree refers to the elder, which has long been a death tree, also signifying the mother Goddess in her Hag aspect. For more info on the elder tree see this site.
