This boulder, dug up by the owner of Spahil house, now resides in his garden covered by some carpet and plastic to protect it from the elements. The owner, a lovely man, is nmore than happy to show it to you and chat about it along with his other finds. These includes 12 saddle querns!
The stone was found by him in the fields below Banshee Stone (County Carlow) and brought back to his garden. The decoration is very unusual. There is one cup mark, a cup and ring motif with radiating lines (similar to Coolasnaghta (County Carlow)) and a very deep arc. The only other place I have seen a mark like this is on one of the stones at The Piper's Stones (County Wicklow).
Another very unusual feature is an irregular border that follows the outline of the top surface of the boulder.
After looking at the photos that I took I intend to pop back in the near future and take another look at this stone. I think it may well have been used to polish axes. If so then this is one of only a few ever found in Ireland.

While looking at the newest finds in the area I took the opportunity to rephotograph this unusual stone. My previous efforts did not do justice to the fine carving. The use of side flash instead of a torch definately makes a big difference.
