Visit Notes

Sunday, 5th January 2003

As I parked up outside the school at the foot of the hill I got a tantalizing glimpse of the stones on the brow of the hill. Excellent! They're still there and they are standing! Now, how to get to them; I didn't fancy climbing through the school to do it, so I asked at the bungalow next door and a young lad said just go through the gate at the side and walk up. So I did.

This is one lovely row. Three stones, each 1.7m tall and 2.5m apart stand not on top of the hill, but just to one side of the top so that they can be seen from below - but not fully.

Each one is a different shape - a triangular one, a tall one and a wide, square one. Only the centre stone is vertical, the other two each lean out in opposite directions, making it look quite comical when viewed along the row.

The views are quite excellent to the west, but high trees block what I imagine could be a spectacular view to the east and north east.

The stones are aligned NE-SW.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
