Visit Notes

Sunday, 10th November 2002

What a pty that this one is so ruined - it would have been a monster. The gallery is over 6m in length and 1.7m wide. The backstone is almost 3m long and spans both the gallery and the double walling.

There is a sill stone at the east end separating the gallery from a possible portico. Two broken roof slabs are leaning against the walls, one in the gallery and one at the entrance.

This site has stuck in my mind ever since I visited it and I've never really been happy with either the photos or my rather poor comments from my previous visit. The obvious course of action was to revisit and put things right, so that's exactly what I did.

The alignment of the gallery is ENE-WSW with the entrance at the east (odd). It is aligned with the highest point of the hill to the west (Kilcommon townland).

Inside the gallery at its rear there is still some of the inner walling left - what you see is mainly the outer 'skin' of the double walling. A broken slab (possibly a bit of a roofslab) lies in the rear section of the gallery. Around the outside of the walls the ground is strewn with what's left of the cairn making the ground very difficult to walk across.
