On the way from Baltinglass to Boleycarrigeen (County Wicklow) I have passed the sign to Kilranelagh graveyard many times, but have never headed up there until today. The reason for this little trip was because I read of two standing stones in the graveyard.
The graves are very overgrown and in one corner there is a lovely pagan burial, lovely to see! I hunted around and eventually found the two stones in question. I doubt that there are actually standing stones, but would appear to be the entrance to a tomb or something.
They are slabs around 1.3m tall and stand with flat faces towards each other. There is another slab, standing on edge between them, giving the impression of an entrance.

It was traditional to carry coffins between these stones before burial. This, to me, indicates that it was a folk memory of the stones coming from a tomb and if not then it is almost crtainly a faint echo of an ancient rebirth ceremony.
