This is an unusual one. I was expecting to find a round mound here, but instead I was confronted with a curious rectangular mound. This is 25m long, 12m wide and 3m in height. The long axis is aligned north-south.
Despite the mound being nothing special to look at in its overgrown state there are a couple of things that should be mentioned. The south end seems to have been dug into, but the gorse and nettles stopped me from seeing if anything was revealed. The main thing, though, is that the mound is directly north west of Howth, meaning that the winter solstice sun would rise over the southern end of the promontory. There is a very clear view of Howth from here and so the alignmment does not seem to be a coincidence.
