Uragh : Stone Circle

The drive up to this circle is spectacular, taking you around lakes and over dramatically carved rivers. When you park you have no view of the circle and all is revealed in quite spectacular fashion after you have climbed up the low hill upon which this circle stands.
As I did this I was elated. I had forgotten the name of this one and so was very pleased indeed to 'stumble' upon a circle that I'd wanted to see for so long.
The circle itself is quite different, being made up of five 1m x 1.5m slabs forming and open ended 2.5m diameter hexagon. Set just ouside the circle, on the oppostite side to the opening is a monstrous 3.5m tall slab that seems to bend in over the circle. The effect is amazing! It really is like a piece of modern sculpture thrown into the most amazing scenery.
It occupies a spot on a terrace on the side of the hill that separates two lakes, so that is is situated at the bottom of one valley and the top of another one. At the end of the valley above a waterfall cascades down the mountainside.
I had very deep feelings at this site. Feelings that go way down into the primitive. The stark contrast of its form and the surrounding nature is extreme.

I do love this site. The location, between the two lakes, has to be one of the finest! After visiting the nearby site at Uragh (west) (County Kerry) I spent a little time here just soaking up the landscape and trying to ignore the idiot who was hogging both parking spaces.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide. Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate. Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies. The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out. UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system. ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps. |
