| Townley Hall - Souterrain - Souterrain |
This is (or would have been) a beauty. Nestled in the center of a field, just off the road this tomb is easily accessible via a style. The mound is protected by a good fence that provides access to the public. Once inside the gate the pleasantness of this place hits you. The mound is low, about 1.4m, and its base clearly outlined by the kerb stones.
On the east side is where the entrance would have been. The passage is now open to the world, with its orthostats exposed. Unfortunately, most of the passage wall stones seem to have been sawn off flush with the ground, or perhaps they are modern stones put there so that you can try to imagine what it would have looked like. Sadly, if this was what was intended, it fails.
If you are passing then stop off and take a peek, so many people seem to whiz past it probably not even knowing it is there.

This really is one of those sites that you don't expect to come back to. I mean, it's not really that good to look at, which is why I forced myself to come back today while I was close and had time.
I'm glad I did, because I noticed that from here Dowth (County Meath) sits proudly on the southern horizon. When it was full-height it must have looked huge, especially if the trees around it were cleared, too.

Take the N51 west from Drogheda for about 6km. Around 2km after the entrance to Townley Hall you will see a small cottage on the left hand side of the road. This site is in the field oppostie.
