Visit Notes

Sunday, 30th June 2002

I have seen pictures of this stone for many years and have always wanted to see it - well, now I have and I wasn't disappointed!

One of the things that did surprise me however is that it now stands in the grounds of a Pet Farm and Leisure Park (access is still free though). Another thing that surprised me was its size. It is actually bigger that I thought it would be. Apparently, most people have the opposite shock according to the lady in the cafe here, they expect it to be bigger and go away disappointed.

The markings are still clearly visible and simply incredible, although the light wasn't perfect while I was there for fully appreciating them.

The stone is about 1.2m tall and oval in plan, perhaps 1m x 50cm. To give some idea of its shape, it resembles an egg in an egg cup. Using this analogy: The 'cup' part is plain with a band of key patterning running around it. The 'egg' is carved with beautiful scrolls and circles in the La Tene style.

This is one of Ireland's great treasures and I feel privileged to have seen it.

With such great light it seemed only natural to drive on to see the Turoe stone, unfortunately, once again, a visit to this stone was accompanied by rain. Oh well. Maybe my next stop off here will be third time lucky.

Miscellanea

On June 17th 2006 I was informed that the Turoe stone is currently closed. A small shed has been erected over it, while decisions are made about how best to preserve it. I will update this if I hear anything further.
