This cross has a strange history. It certainly is not where it was originally placed and now stands in front of the Kells Heritage Centre, nicely protected from the weather by a glass canopy.
It lay on the ground for many years and was erected at the behest of Jonathan Swift. Sadly, it was re-erected in completely the wrong orientation. The west face now faces north.
It is quite badly damaged from weathering, but what does remain of the carving is quite splendid. Some of the scenes depicted are: The Adoration of the Magi, Loaves and Fishes, Moses Receiving the Ten Commandments & Adam and Eve. The base has parading men and beasties, including centaurs.
Melissa had never seen a high cross 'in the flesh' and so we stopped off to have a look at this one. Not the best maybe, but right alongside our route.
