| Kilgobbin Cross - High Cross |
Although I've visited the cross on a couple of occasions, for some reason, I have never looked at the church. The weather was so nice last night that I decided to check it out.
The first thing that struck me was not the worn Rathdown stye grave slabs on display within, but the vandalism and litter. Several of the slabs have graffitti on them and the inside of the ruin was littered with empty drinks cans, booze bottle and plastic cups. I cleared a lot of these up before leaving.
As mentioned there are several badly worn slabs of the Rathdown style hung on the wall just like at Rathmichael church. In the small porch there is also a few pieces of architectural remains, bits of arches and such like.
Raised up on a little mound of earth this church is situated in a very nice position in the valley. It's a shame that the modern housing hides the views.
From The N11 in Dublin take the R113 west and then the R117 south until you reach Stepaside. In Stepaside turn left at the crossroads. After 350m you will see a sign pointing to Kilgobbin Cross up a lane to the left. When you reach the cross the church is on the rise above you to the south of the road.
