Visit Notes

This incredible and unique gatehouse welcomes you into the monastic site that is Glendalough.

Originally a two story building it is now just the two arches. The second floor would have been where the gatekeeper lived.

Just inside the compound is a lovely, but faint, cross carved on a huge rock to the right, the sanctum marker.

Directions

From Laragh drive past the Glendalough visitors center until you round a sharp bend and cross a bridge. The gatehouse is straight in front of you. There is limited parking here.

Miscellanea

Once past the Sanctum marker (the carved cross) you were grante 90 days sanctuary here no matter what the crime. Whilst here none of the local kings could touch you. However, after those ninety days you were cast outside. This was probably a way of making you take holy orders and join the monastery.
