Visit Notes

Monday, 4th May 2009

The first time I tried to visit this site there was a very large bull in the field who was rather protective of the cows he was sharing it with. This time the field was empty, so I could look for the stone.

One side of the stone has been quarried away, which could be interpreted as an attempt to destroy it, but it could also be read as an effort to preserve the single bullaun while take rock for other purposes. The low hollow around it is probably caused by the cattle in the field.

The single bullaun is about 30cm in diameter and fairly hemispherical. Next to the field is the graveyard to Whaley Abbey.

Reaching the field is an adventure, as the road up to the graveyard (you can park in front of this) is quite rough. You have to drive past an old gatehouse, which always makes you feel like you're trespassing in some way, but the people I've met by the graveyard have always been welcoming.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
