I was quite excited when I saw the roadside signpost to the cashel. We were heading for the cashel in this townland that has a sweathouse in it. The one that is signposted is not that one, but a different one further up the valley.
This is an impressive and odd site. For a start it is built on a fairly steep slope, which seems very odd. The walls remain to a good height - 4m in places - and the entrance is well-defined with a stack of lintels in place.
There is an odd set of steps built into the outer wall and there is a set of protruding steps on the inside of the wall at the same place. I don't know what purpose the outer steps could have had.
There is a small building against the inside of the north wall and near to this there are two tiny lintelled openings. There is nothing visible behind these as they are full of rubble, but they may lead to a souterrain or something similar.
