As soon as I read about this site I just had to come here. With all my other trips to Antrim taking me to different areas I thought I'd never get here.
This is a special site. The cairn is 3m high and 30m in diameter. 10m outside of the edge of the cairn there is a low circle of tightly packed stones. This could be a later enclosure. If it's the original kerb then this was a massive cairn! The ring of stones around the monument made up of an inner and outer ring of stones set about 50cm apart. There doesn't seem to be an entrance.
On the top of the cairn you can see a few large stones exposed that may be from a chamber. There are also a few hollows where material has been robbed away. There is an OS trig point on top of the cairn and next to the base of this you can see a rectangular arrangement of stones. These are the remains of the schoolhouse that was built on top of the cairn and gives the site its name.
The views are amazing and the farmer is a really nice chap. This site is definitely one to see. I know cairns aren't very exciting, but this one's so odd and the views so good that it's worth a visit.
