Visit Notes

Saturday, 9th February 2008

After reading Price's notebooks last year I went hunting for this bullaun stone. I walked right past it several times. Today's hunt for it was rather frustrating. After being told roughly where it was I thought I could see the stone, only it was on the bank above me and I couldn't see the top of it. To make things worse there is a 2m high, barbed-wire-topped fence around the bit of hill it stands in. After some wandering I found an unlocked gate into the area and made my way to the stone. I went directly, which is very dangerous: this was a plantation and the ground if very bump and covered in hidden holes. If you attempt to visit this one walk all the way around the fence to reach it and be very careful!

The stone set well into the slope and has a triangular plan. There is a nice single bullaun set centrally and a partial (possibly natural) basin to one side. The good bullaun is about 35cm across and 20cm deep. The views aren't very impressive, but this is down to the pine plantations on the hillside opposite and the car park below it.
