When I last visited Kilmalkedar I knew about the existence of an oratory. As I couldn't see it on that day, nor any signs for it, I had assumed it was not accessible. Today I saw what I thought could be it three or fields to the west of the main church site, so I went to investigate.
A few hundred metres down the road from the old graveyard there is a new one on the left. Opposite the fare end of its car parking area there is a gate that leads to the oratory. This one is smaller than Gallarus Oratory (County Kerry), but somehow I like it more. The very top of the building is missing, but this adds to its charm and feeling of authenticity: the restored Gallarus is rather sterile-looking, but this feels real.
The walled enclosure around this glorious building is far too small. Most cameras will not be able to take a full picture of it. This is one site that I would recommend visiting on a wet day. This is not because you'll avoid crowds - the lack of signposts will see to that - but because of teh lovely colour that the stone takes on when it's wet.
