I really didn't know what to expect if and when I found this amazing site. It looks very deep into the woods on the OS map, but it's not actually too bad. You can see the clearing from the track.
This monument is special. It consists of large circular ditch with a 1.5m high bank inside it and a low bank outside. The outer face of this was found to be lined with stones during excavation. Inside the enclosure there is another ring ditch that surrounds a low mound - similar to a ring barrow.
Excavations also revealed that this was in fact a multi-phase monument. The henge is the final stage, but it originally consisted of a timber henge. This was followed by a brief period of habitation before the hhenge and mound were raised.
Unfortunately the site as been shamefully neglected and the central area now had birch trees and gorse bushes growing in it, making it very hard to appreciate the site as a whole. It really should be cleared and whoever is responsible for it should be ashamed of themselves.
