| Ballinlough - Standing Stone |
When viewed from the road this barrow looks like a disappointingly gorse covered bump in the field, but closer inspection reveals much more. When viewed from within the field the 50cm high bank that surrounds the 5m diameter flat inner area is very visible. This configuration makes this a fine ring barrow.
Barrows can be quite boring, but this one has a little surprise. On the southwest side there is large stone set into the earthern bank - a most unusual feature. Looking over this stone from the centre of the circle you are aligned with the valley that separates Devilsbit Mountain from the cairn topped Knockanora. To add a little weight to this alignment there is a standing stone some 100m from the barrow which also sits on this line (see subsite).
