It was a snap decision to stop off at this site and I'm so glad that we did so. The court tomb lies in a boggy field right next to the road and is easy to access. No roof stones are in situ but many stones lie around the gallery. These seem to form the kerb of a now missing trapezoidal cairn. The gallery has two chambers, the rear one of which is extremely interesting.
The rear gallery was, I believe, once a portal tomb in its own right, which was later converted into the pseudo court tomb that can be seen today. If this is the case then the dating of court tombs and portal tombs may have to be rethought.
The whole monument is 10m long with the gallery occupying the rear 4m or so. The rear chamber or original portal tomb is 3m long and the chamber to the front of it definitely seems to have been added as an afterthought.
This monument needs some serious reassessment by the 'establishment' as the inventory for Donegal simply states that the rear chamber 'resembles' a portal tomb. IT IS A PORTAL TOMB!
