There's not a lot of megalithic stuff in this area, so I was quite excited about visiting this site. I was quite disappointed after I'd visited it though! Before I get into why I'll give the site's positive points though.
This is a nice multiple stone row, which would have consisted of up to 5 stones of which just two still stand. The tallest one of these, at the south end, is around 2m tall and 1.5m broad. The smaller of the two stones is around 1m tall. All the slabs are rough mudstone. There is a 2m gap between these two stones and I think one of the fallen slabs possibly stood between them. There are three other stones lying around, which presumably all came from the row. One of these looks to be bigger than the larger of the stones that still stand. The row is aligned north-south.
The stones over look a tributary of the Shannon Estuary and a small island in the bay called Greenish Island - Grai-inis in Irish.
Now the bad bit. I can cope with some monuments being left overgrown - it protects them from cattle etc (which obviously use these as scratching posts at the moment) - but why leave lots of blue plastic lying around? Surely this could be dangerous to the cattle in the field as well as being an enviromental nightmare!
From the centre of Ashkeaton head north towards the large factory. Cross the N69 and pass the factory and drive on for another kilometre. Take a left turn and about 300m along park on the left, where there is a large roadside area to do so. The stones are up to the right beyond the hedgerow at the top of the field.
