The ruins of St. Mach?°n's church look as if they have nothing much to offer at first sight, but a quick investigation soon proves this not to be the case.
The church is currently undergoing some restoration work and the east end has been done very well, the rest has undergone or is undergoing structural stability work.
The window on the south side has two fine pieces of Romanesque carving. These look as if they are reproductions. If they are then they are very well produced. If they are not then they are in fantastic condition. One is a simple Celtic knot pattern, but the other (to the right of the window) is quite exquisite. It shows a hooded figure (possibly a monk?) standing over a dragon whose head is twisted upwards and the frame spews from its mouth. Its tail twists into a knot pattern behind it.
While looking through this window I spied a small piece of an ogham stone used in the north wall. This (I think) is unrecorded, meaures about 30cm long and contains possibly two letters - either I, N or Q and R or Z.
There is a nice cross slab mounted on the inside of the east wall with a encircled cross in relief.
