Visit Notes

Sunday, 15th February 2004

St. Berrihert's Kyle is a small, fairly modern enclosure, that is the home to around 70 cross-slabs and the head of a high cross. The high cross remains are mounted above a cross base that has a bullaun at one corner with its turn stone in place.

Many offerings are scattered about the shelved wall, mainly around the cross head, which bears a marigold motif at its centre and one arm shows either Jacob and the Angel or two wrestlers as can also be seen at Durrow (County Offaly) to name but one. The slabs vary from plain to quite ornately decorated and the trees around and about have ribbons and offerings tied to them.

The site is far from the beaten track and exudes tranquility and harmony. Most people who visit here seem to miss the real reason for this site having been built here and that is the well a few hundred yards away (see sub-site).
