Visit Notes

In the middle of the field opposite the church you will see a low circular structure. Within this is an incredible bullaun stone. There are two huge bullauns, one of which does not hold water anymore, and a smaller, very shallow one. The shallow used to have a turn-stone in it, but this was not there when I visited. This has only disappeared in recent times - perhaps it has been sent to someone for a cure, as is often done with some 'holy stones'.

The large bullauns are very irregular and don't appear to have been ground out, unlike the one standing at the nearby well.

Mounted into the wall surrounding this stone is a small cross-slab.

This whole site (church, cross, well, cell) is set in the most beautiful spot. Low hill rise up to the west and south, with the mountains towering above to the south too. The west is 'blocked' off by a low hill as well, giving an enclosed and protected feel to the site. Its relative remoteness and the fact that a train did not travel along the line (which is just 400m away) also helped a great deal to enhance the tranquility I felt here.
